Pool Safety
Posted on Jun 7th, 2012

Pool Safety Tips

  • Never let children play in or near water unsupervised. If there are several adults, take turns being the designated watcher.
  • Never let distractions keep you from watching you child at all times. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer the phone.
  • Do not rely on inflatable swimming aids that are not approved personal floatation devices to keep you child safe in the water.
  • Do not assume that swimming lessons alone will prevent drowning.
  • Attend a CPR class and make sure your babysitter knows CPR also. Contact your local Red Cross, hospital or fire department for classes.
  • Keep rescue equipment and a phone near the pool at all times.
  • Enforce no running, pushing dunking and diving rules.
  • When the pool is not in use, remove toys from in and around the area so that kids are not tempted to reach for them.
  • Enclose the pool within a fence. Make sure the gate can be locked. If a fence is not possible, consider door alarms to alert you when a child attempts to leave the house unsupervised
  • Cover above ground pools when not in use. Be aware that standing water on top of the pool cover also poses a drowning risk.
